Chibi Maruko chan is the nickname of a sweetly obnoxious 9-year-old girl. She tricks her grandfather, ponders for hours over how to spend her allowance, and hates sitting next to ugly boys. She talks, feels and lives just as real kids do.
As the second term commences, Maruko and her classmates return to their small groups. Maruko’s group includes two naughty boys and Maruko is forced to be one of their subordinates. She seems to face a lot of pressure at school.
As the school’s athletic meet approaches, all the classmates are busy exercising. Maruko is no exception, although her laziness means that she is late sometimes. Maruko realizes that the two boys rival each other in everything they do, and that their friendship is deep and strong.

Where it came from
Released in December 1990, the first Chibi Maruko-chan film served as a cinematic extension of the immensely popular anime series, which had premiered on Fuji TV earlier that same year. Produced by Nippon Animation, the film captured the nostalgic, slice-of-life charm of Momoko Sakura’s semi-autobiographical manga, focusing on the everyday adventures of a young schoolgirl nicknamed Maruko in 1970s suburban Japan.
The film was directed by Tsutomu Shibayama and featured character designs that maintained the distinct, minimalist aesthetic of the original manga. By bringing the characters to the big screen, the production solidified the franchise's status as a cultural phenomenon in Japan, appealing to both children and adults who identified with its heartfelt, humorous look at childhood and family dynamics.
