Synopsis

Jarinko Chie is a movie directed by Takahata in 1981. Based on the very popular manga by Etsumi HARUKI, it is about ten year old Chie, "the most unfortunate girl in Japan", who manages her family diner while her unemployed yakuza father and her mother are separated. This sounds really depressing, but it's actually a very funny comedy.

The story is set in Osaka, which has a totally different culture from Tokyo. After the success of the movie, a TV series was made, and Takahata worked as the chief director.

Provenance

Where it came from

Chie The Brat, known in Japan as Jarinko Chie, was produced by the acclaimed studio Tokyo Movie Shinsha and directed by the legendary Isao Takahata. Based on the long-running manga series by Etsumi Haruki, the 1981 television adaptation sought to capture the grit and humor of life in Osaka's working-class districts. The narrative centers on a young, resilient girl named Chie who navigates the chaotic responsibilities of running a horumon-yaki stall while dealing with her immature, gambling-addicted father.

The series is celebrated for its distinct visual style and its departures from the more polished, fantastical animation typical of the era. Takahata, who would later go on to co-found Studio Ghibli, focused on a grounded, slice-of-life realism that highlighted the warmth and struggle of his characters. Upon its release, the series was received as a masterful piece of character-driven storytelling, praised for its poignant sincerity and its ability to find profound heart within the vernacular culture of the Shitamachi neighborhoods.
