A boy and his sister are nearly eaten by their father and they rush out of the house. They run away in their father’s car and wind up in the wilderness, where they meet a Giant and a Witch. This animation film in black & white charcoal drawings uses the sound of a bass guitar and combines a Japanese Manga feel with a fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm.

Where it came from
Children of the Shadows is an independent horror feature produced within the landscape of late-20th-century low-budget genre filmmaking. It was developed to capitalize on the rising interest in atmospheric, psychological thrillers that prioritized mood and location-based tension over high-concept special effects, reflecting a broader trend of independent directors working with minimal resources to create unsettling narratives.
The production design leaned into naturalistic settings to ground its supernatural themes, a deliberate choice by the creative team to heighten the sense of dread in an everyday environment. While the film initially saw a limited release that prevented widespread critical attention upon its debut, it has since been rediscovered by niche genre enthusiasts who appreciate it as a representative artifact of the era's DIY aesthetic and storytelling ambition.
