Where it came from
Children of the Sea was produced by the acclaimed animation house Studio 4°C and released in 2019, serving as a cinematic adaptation of Daisuke Igarashi’s award-winning manga series. Directed by Ayumu Watanabe, the film was conceived as a visual exploration of humanity’s connection to the mysteries of the ocean and the cosmos, moving away from traditional narrative structures to prioritize an immersive, dreamlike aesthetic.
The film is widely recognized for the distinct character designs and breathtaking animation direction of Kenichi Konishi. By blending traditional hand-drawn techniques with sophisticated digital effects, the studio aimed to capture the organic, fluid nature of sea life. Upon its release, the project garnered significant critical praise for its experimental visual ambition and the ambitious orchestral score composed by Joe Hisaishi, though its abstract storytelling remained a frequent point of discussion among critics.
