The story takes place in the town of Izumo, in Shimane prefecture, a place steeped in folklore and ancestral traditions.
Among them is the myth of Kamiari, which has given rise over the centuries to a series of celebrations that take place in October. Formerly, the month of October was called "Kannazuki" ("the month without gods") but in Izumo, it is called "Kamiarizuki" ("month of the gods") because it is considered that during this time of the year , a myriad of deities gather for a pilgrimage to the city's sanctuary.
At the heart of this place lives Kanna, a young girl passionate about racing who suddenly loses all her motivation when her mother dies.

Where it came from
Child of Kamiari Month was produced by LIDENFILMS and released in 2021, emerging from a successful crowdfunding initiative on the platform Crepu. The project was conceived as an original feature film grounded in the Izumo Province of Shimane Prefecture, Japan, drawing deeply from the Shinto belief that gods from across the country gather annually at the Izumo-taisha shrine. The production sought to blend traditional Japanese folklore with a modern coming-of-age narrative centered on a young girl named Kanna.
The film's visual identity and emotional tone were guided by director Takana Shirai, who aimed to portray the landscapes and spiritual heritage of Izumo through a vibrant, animation-forward lens. Upon its release, the film was noted for its sincere exploration of grief and its dedication to local cultural myths. While critics occasionally noted the film's ambitious scope in relation to its independent production roots, it remains recognized as a heartfelt effort to preserve and animate regional Japanese traditions for a global audience.
