Where it came from
Children Who Chase Lost Voices, also known as Journey to Agartha, was produced by CoMix Wave Films and directed by Makoto Shinkai. Released in 2011, the film represented a significant departure from Shinkai’s earlier, more intimate works, as he sought to create an expansive adventure epic inspired by his childhood interest in fantasy novels and the works of Hayao Miyazaki. The narrative follows a young girl named Asuna who embarks on a journey to a hidden land called Agartha after hearing a mysterious song on her crystal radio.
The film's visual design is characterized by the lush, detailed backgrounds that became a hallmark of Shinkai's collaboration with art director Takumi Tanji. While the film was noted for its ambition and thematic exploration of loss and the process of 'letting go,' it received a mixed critical reception upon its release, with some praising its atmospheric world-building while others felt the influence of Studio Ghibli was perhaps too pronounced. Over time, it has been recognized as a pivotal transitional project in Shinkai's filmography, bridging the gap between his early independent productions and his later global blockbusters.
