Where it came from
Chillin’ in My 30s after Getting Fired from the Demon King’s Army began as a light novel series written by Rokujūyon Okazawa and illustrated by Sage Joh, debuting on the user-generated publishing site Shōsetsuka ni Narō in 2018. The story serves as a subversion of the traditional fantasy hero’s journey, focusing on a weary soldier named Dariel who is dismissed from the Demon King's army and subsequently discovers a new, more peaceful life among humans. Its transition from a web novel to a printed light novel series published by Kodansha allowed the narrative to reach a wider audience, eventually leading to its adaptation into a television anime.
The 2023 anime adaptation was produced by Encourage Films and directed by Fumitoshi Oizaki. The production aimed to emphasize the series' themes of work-life balance and the search for purpose outside of combat, utilizing a relaxed, character-driven aesthetic that distinguishes it from more high-octane action fantasy titles. Upon its release, the series was received as a comfortable addition to the 'slow life' fantasy subgenre, appealing to viewers who prefer character development and world-building over intense conflict-driven plotlines.
