Where it came from
Chinyuuki: Tarou to Yukai na Nakama-tachi was released in 2009 as a three-episode original video animation series, adapting the satirical manga by Manga Taro. The project was designed to capture the absurdist, irreverent humor characteristic of the original source material, which parodies the classic Chinese literary epic Journey to the West. The animation focuses on extreme character designs and a crude aesthetic that intentionally moves away from mainstream polished animation standards to mirror the creator's signature rough, grotesque artistic style.
The production was managed by DLE Inc., a studio known for its distinct, low-frame-rate flash animation style. Upon its release, the adaptation received a polarized reception, typical of works that rely heavily on toilet humor and boundary-pushing absurdity. While it gained a cult following among fans of unconventional comedy, it was largely viewed as an niche experience that demanded an audience already accustomed to the hyper-exaggerated nature of Manga Taro's previous works.
