A grey and white kitten with black stripes wanders away from her mother and siblings one day while enjoying a walk outside. Lost in her surroundings, the kitten struggles to find her family and instead is found by a young boy, Youhei, and his mother. They take the kitten home, but pets are not allowed in their housing complex, so they try to find a new home for the kitten. This proves to be difficult, and the family eventually decides to keep the kitten, naming her "Chi".

Where it came from
Chi's Sweet Home was adapted into an anime series in 2008 by the esteemed studio Madhouse, based on the popular manga series by Kanata Konami. The production was intended to translate the gentle, slice-of-life charm of the original comics into a format accessible to younger viewers and adults alike, utilizing a distinctive, simplified aesthetic that captures the kitten's perspective. It emerged during a period when studios were experimenting with shorter, three-minute episode formats, allowing for a focused and digestible narrative style that resonated with an international audience.
The series design team focused on creating an endearing visual experience that mirrored the manga's watercolor-inspired tones and expressive character art. By keeping the animation simple and character-driven, the studio successfully emphasized the warmth and humor of domestic life through the eyes of a stray kitten adjusting to a new family. Upon its release, the series was received with considerable acclaim for its relaxing atmosphere and its ability to capture the relatable, often humorous behaviors of domestic pets.
