Chocolate Underground the Movie

Chocolate Underground is a 2009 animated feature film produced by the renowned Japanese studio Production I.G. Based on the children's novel 'Almond's Chocolate' by Alex Shearer, the film tells the story of two boys living in a dystopian society where chocolate has been declared illegal by a puritanical government. The narrative follows their efforts to establish an underground factory to smuggle the illicit treat back to the public, serving as a whimsical allegory for censorship and personal freedom.

The film was directed by Tadaaki Hosaka, who sought to translate the charm of British children's literature into the distinct visual language of anime. Production I.G, famous for high-profile projects like Ghost in the Shell, utilized a clean, accessible aesthetic for this project to appeal to a younger demographic. While the film remained a niche release outside of Japan, it was recognized for its earnest adaptation of the source material's themes and its stylistic departure from the studio's more mature, action-oriented catalog.
