Where it came from
Chocomatsu-san: White Day-hen was released in 2021 as a short-form original net animation tie-in to the popular Osomatsu-san franchise. Produced by the studio 10GAUGE, this installment was created as a seasonal promotional campaign to celebrate White Day, a holiday celebrated in Japan one month after Valentine's Day where recipients typically return gifts to those who gave them chocolates.
The animation serves as a lighthearted, commercial-style expansion of the Matsuno brothers' universe, leaning into the franchise's established aesthetic of absurd, character-driven comedy. By focusing on the brothers' efforts to navigate the cultural expectations of White Day, the short maintains the satirical tone of the main series while utilizing the distinct, minimalist character designs established by the studio's adaptation of Fujio Akatsuka’s original manga characters.
