Chou Futsuu Toshi Kashiwa Densetsu

Chou Futsuu Toshi Kashiwa Densetsu, or Super Ordinary City Kashiwa Legend, emerged in 2016 as a locally-focused original net animation series produced by Super Normal Studio. The project was conceived as a regional promotional tool designed to highlight the hidden charms and specific geography of Kashiwa City in the Chiba Prefecture of Japan. By blending slice-of-life elements with local landmarks, the studio sought to foster community pride and draw interest to the area through a medium that resonated with younger, internet-savvy audiences.

The series is characterized by its unconventional, low-budget aesthetic, which leans into a surreal and often deadpan sense of humor that subverts the tropes of traditional tourism-based anime. The creative team aimed for a self-deprecating style that played on the idea of Kashiwa being a 'super ordinary' city, using local geography as the backdrop for absurd character interactions. Upon its release, it gained a modest but dedicated following for its authentic representation of regional life and its willingness to embrace its niche status as a local curiosity rather than a mainstream production.
