Where it came from
Chou Yuu Sekai: BEING THE REALITY was released in 2017 as a collaborative ONA project between the Japanese studio Asahi Production and various Chinese partners, emerging from a period of increasing cross-border animation ventures intended to bridge the creative markets of both nations. The series is based on an original web manga of the same name and fits into the isekai genre, focusing on themes of gaming and alternate realities that were particularly popular in the mid-2010s.
The visual design and directorial approach sought to blend typical Japanese character aesthetics with high-concept narrative elements common in Chinese web fiction. As a niche web-exclusive production, it was designed to appeal to digital-native audiences who enjoy fast-paced storytelling and fantasy tropes. The reception was modest, largely viewed as an experimental entry in the growing ecosystem of international anime co-productions.
