Where it came from
Cleopatra, released in 1970, was the third entry in Mushi Production's 'Animerama' trilogy, a project spearheaded by Osamu Tezuka intended to bring adult-oriented, sophisticated animation to a Japanese audience. This feature was directed by Eiichi Yamamoto and Tezuka himself, aiming to blend historical drama with surreal, psychedelic visual sequences that were characteristic of the experimental animation movement of the late 1960s and early 1970s.
The film was designed to subvert traditional portrayals of the Egyptian queen, leaning heavily into stylistic anachronisms and eroticism to distance itself from the high-budget Hollywood production released in 1963. While the film was noted for its unconventional artistic vision and avant-garde approach to narrative, it received a polarized reception upon release, ultimately serving as a significant milestone in the evolution of anime as a medium for complex, mature storytelling.
