Where it came from
Clockwork Planet was produced by studio Xebec as a 12-episode anime adaptation of the light novel series written by Yuu Kamiya and Tsubaki Himana. Debuting in 2017, the series emerged during a period of high popularity for post-apocalyptic and steampunk-themed light novels in Japan, aiming to translate the intricate mechanical aesthetics and high-stakes action of the original source material into a visual medium.
The production sought to emphasize the series' core identity—a world literally run by complex gears and clockwork—through a combination of traditional animation and digital effects. While the series received moderate attention for its unique world-building and character designs, it was often noted by critics for the challenges inherent in adapting dense exposition-heavy novels into a single-cour television format, ultimately occupying a niche space in the mid-2010s anime landscape.
