Clockwork Fighters Hiwou's War

Clockwork Fighters Hiwou's War, known in Japan as Karakuri Kiden Hiwou Senki, was produced by the animation studio Bones and released in 2000. It stands as one of the studio's earliest original works, emerging shortly after the company was founded by former Sunrise staff members. The series is set during the Meiji Restoration, blending historical elements of Japan's transition into modernity with steampunk-inspired mecha technology centered on autonomous wooden puppets called Karakuri.

The series was directed by Tetsuro Amino, who sought to weave a narrative about children navigating the political instability of the late 19th century. The character designs were handled by Hiroshi Osaka, whose artistic vision emphasized a distinct, slightly rustic aesthetic that contrasted with the more polished, high-tech science fiction common in the industry at the time. While the show maintains a dedicated following among fans of Meiji-era historical fiction, it is often viewed today as a significant early project that showcased the studio's capacity for complex, character-driven storytelling before they gained wider fame.
