Clover

Clover is a manga series created by the artist collective CLAMP, serialized in the magazine Amie beginning in 1997. The narrative takes place in a futuristic, dystopian society governed by the military, focusing on the life of a girl named Suu who possesses unique telepathic abilities. The story emerged during a period of experimentation for CLAMP, who sought to blend traditional sequential storytelling with a highly minimalist, architectural aesthetic influenced by Art Nouveau and modern design principles.

The adaptation by Studio MADHOUSE, released as a short promotional film in 1999, is notable for its departure from standard animation techniques of the era. The production team utilized a distinct visual language that mirrored the stark, negative-space-heavy style of the original manga. While the anime adaptation was brief and intended largely to showcase the aesthetic potential of the source material, it remains a recognized example of the studio's ability to translate complex, stylized print work into a fluid cinematic medium.
