Where it came from
The Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch Picture Drama STAGE 0.97 - Hajimari no Zenya was produced by Studio Sunrise in 2013 as a special promotional piece. It serves as a bridge between the established narrative arcs of the original series, designed to offer viewers deeper insight into the events leading up to the main conflict. The production maintains the visual aesthetic characteristic of the franchise, relying on the series' signature character designs and atmospheric storytelling to expand on the motivations of its central figures.
This picture drama format, which utilizes still illustrations accompanied by voice acting and music, was a common medium for the franchise to explore peripheral stories that did not fit into the primary episode run. Created to satisfy the appetite of a dedicated fanbase, the STAGE 0.97 installment was received as a respectful addition to the canon, providing character context rather than relying on action-heavy sequences. It reflects the studio's commitment to maintaining narrative density even within short-form, supplemental material.
