Where it came from
The Cool-headed Hoozuki OVA series was released in 2015 as a companion to the popular supernatural comedy manga by Natsumi Eguchi. Produced by Wit Studio, these episodes were created to bridge the gap between the first and second seasons of the anime adaptation, maintaining the dark, deadpan humor that defines the series. The project served to highlight the bureaucratic absurdities of the Japanese underworld through the lens of its pragmatic protagonist, Hoozuki.
The character design and overall aesthetic direction were aimed at faithfully capturing Eguchi’s distinct, illustrative style, which leans into traditional Japanese motifs contrasted with modern administrative tropes. Wit Studio’s adaptation was well-received by fans for its commitment to the dry, cynical tone of the source material and its technical consistency, ensuring the transition from the manga panels to the screen remained seamless.
