Where it came from
Coppelion was produced by Studio GoHands and premiered as a television series in 2013, based on the long-running manga by Tomonori Inoue. The series is set in a post-apocalyptic Tokyo rendered uninhabitable by a nuclear meltdown, where a team of genetically engineered high school girls, known as the Coppelion, are deployed to search for survivors. The narrative reflects the anxieties of post-Fukushima Japan, grappling with themes of radiation, ethics, and human survival.
The adaptation is notable for its highly stylized aesthetic, characterized by a distinct high-contrast art style and a deliberate color palette intended to evoke the haunting atmosphere of a desolate metropolis. While the series was praised for its visual ambition and atmospheric direction by Shingo Suzuki, it faced mixed reception regarding its pacing and thematic execution compared to the original manga source material.
