Where it came from
Cosmic Princess Kaguya! was released in 2026 as a streaming-exclusive original net animation produced by Studio Colorido. Developed during a period when the studio sought to marry its signature whimsical, pastel-toned aesthetic with more expansive science-fiction narratives, the project aimed to reimagine classic Japanese folklore through a contemporary lens. It arrived as part of a strategic push to diversify the studio's portfolio beyond its traditional focus on magical realism.
The character design and visual direction were spearheaded by the studio's internal creative team, who emphasized fluid, high-frame-rate animation to capture the ethereal nature of lunar travel. The project was conceived as a lighthearted, visually dense spectacle intended to appeal to a global audience. Upon its debut, it was noted primarily for its technical polish and vibrant art style, which helped solidify the studio's reputation for high-quality digital animation in the mid-2020s.
