Croisée in a Foreign Labyrinth OVA

Croisée in a Foreign Labyrinth, known in Japan as Ikoku Meiro no Croisée, originated as a manga series by Hinako Takeda that began serialization in 2006. The story follows Yune, a young Japanese girl who travels to 19th-century Paris to work at a boutique in the Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert. When the studio Satelight adapted the work into an anime television series in 2011, they also produced this special OVA, or original video animation, which served as a supplementary episode to expand upon the atmospheric, slow-paced narrative of the main series.

The production sought to emphasize the visual detail of the Meiji-era Japan and Belle Époque Paris settings, a hallmark of Takeda’s original art style. Directed by Kenji Nagasaki, the animation focused on the gentle cultural exchange between Yune and the French shopkeeper Claude. The OVA was received as a stylistic continuation of the television broadcast, appreciated by viewers for its delicate character studies and its faithful preservation of the manga's quiet, reflective tone.
