Where it came from
Croisée in a Foreign Labyrinth, known in Japan as Ikoku Meiro no Croisée, was produced by Studio Satelight and aired in 2011 as a television anime adaptation of the manga by Hinako Ashihara. The narrative is set in late 19th-century Paris, focusing on the cultural exchange between Yune, a young Japanese traveler, and Claude, the proprietor of an ironworks shop. It was created to capture a serene, historical atmosphere, emphasizing the aesthetic interplay between Meiji-era Japanese sensibilities and the Belle Époque industrial style of France.
The series is noted for its meticulous art direction and character designs, which were supervised to maintain the delicate, watercolor-inspired quality of the original manga. Kenji Kamiyama served as the director, aiming to craft a gentle, reflective viewing experience. Upon its release, the show was widely praised by critics for its tranquil pacing and high production values, though it remained a niche title that prioritized atmospheric storytelling over conventional action-driven anime tropes.
