Crossing Time

Crossing Time, or Fumikiri Jikan in its original Japanese release, was produced by the studio Ekachi Epilka and first broadcast in 2018. The series is an adaptation of a manga by Yoshimi Sato, conceptualized as a collection of short vignettes centered around the mundane yet contemplative moments experienced by people waiting at railway crossings. Each episode functions as a brief slice-of-life snapshot, intentionally slowing the pace of the narrative to focus on the human interactions occurring while a train passes.

The animation and direction, overseen by Yoshio Suzuki, lean into a minimalist aesthetic to mirror the simple, observational nature of the source material. By focusing on the repetitive action of lowered crossing gates, the series aimed to capture a sense of transient connection between strangers. While the short-form format was unconventional for the season, it was received as a quiet, experimental character study that prioritizes atmosphere and brief, intimate dialogue over high-stakes plot development.
