Adapted from the most outstanding collection of Chinese classical short stories.
Pu Songling, a scholar, stays overnight at Lanruo Temple. He is caught by two monsters, Toad and Turtle, and brought to the bottom of an ancient well to judge the quality of his stories.
In a temple, a well, and a tree, classic chapters of Strange Stories, such as The Taoist Priest of Mount Laoshan, Lotus Princess, Nie Xiaoqian, Painted Skin, and Lady Lu, unfold one after another across the vicissitudes of life. Six story styles present an audio-visual feast of the most bizarre stories, the most emotional and the most fateful.

Where it came from
Curious Tales of a Temple emerged from the creative output of Light Chaser Animation, a Beijing-based studio recognized for its focus on Chinese folklore and traditional aesthetic sensibilities within the 3D animation medium. The production was conceived to bridge the gap between historic cultural narratives and contemporary digital storytelling, aiming to provide a visually distinct experience that separates itself from the dominant styles of international animation houses.
The film was designed under the studio's broader mission to revitalize Chinese mythology for a global audience, employing refined character modeling and environment design to emphasize the architectural beauty of temple life. Critics and audiences noted the film for its technical precision and its commitment to a specific cultural atmosphere, though it largely remained within the niche space of fans who follow the studio's ongoing efforts to build a localized cinematic universe.
