Where it came from
D4 Princess was produced by Studio Daume and aired in 1999 as a whimsical, character-driven television series. Emerging during a period when Japanese animation studios were experimenting with surreal, high-energy premises, the show focuses on a young protagonist who unexpectedly finds herself the center of attention for four different princes. It reflects the stylistic trends of late-nineties comedy anime, favoring eccentric humor and vibrant, fast-paced character designs over complex narrative arcs.
The series is characterized by its lighthearted subversion of the princess trope, utilizing a quirky art style intended to emphasize comedic expression. While the show maintains a cult following among long-term fans of the genre for its nostalgic charm and distinct late-twentieth-century aesthetic, it was received as a niche entry in the competitive anime market of the time, often noted more for its offbeat premise than for mainstream critical acclaim.
