Where it came from
Da Hufa, released in 2017, marked a significant milestone in Chinese animation as one of the first domestic films to be rated PG-13 due to its dark themes and stylized violence. Directed by Yang Zhigang under the pseudonym Bu Sifan, the film was produced by Coloroom Pictures and stands out for its bold departure from the standard fantasy or family-oriented aesthetics typical of the industry at the time.
The film employs a distinct, hand-drawn ink-wash aesthetic that contrasts sharply with its cynical and philosophical narrative. Its design focuses on minimalist character silhouettes and surreal environments to critique societal conformity and political repression. While it polarized critics upon release, it gained a devoted cult following for its uncompromising tone and its role in demonstrating that animation could be a viable medium for mature, sociopolitical commentary in the Chinese market.
