Where it came from
Dagashi Kashi was produced by studio feel. and premiered in 2016 as an adaptation of the manga series by Kotoyama. The series centers on the subculture of traditional Japanese snacks, known as dagashi, blending comedy with a nostalgic exploration of rural commerce. The production sought to celebrate the sensory details and historical significance of these small, inexpensive treats through the lens of a lighthearted narrative.
The character designs and animation style were praised for their expressive, stylized approach, which helped convey the eccentric personality of the lead character, Hotaru Shidare. By focusing on the niche subject matter of snack shops, the series functioned as both a cultural documentary and a character-driven comedy. It was generally well-received for its unique premise and its ability to turn the act of eating retro candy into a compelling visual experience.
