Thirteen years after their sudden disappearance, an alien race known as the Heterodyne resurface without warning. To combat the Heterodyne, three office workers from the 21st Century Security Corporation operate Dai-Guard - a giant robot no longer regarded as an oversized paperweight. Unfortunately, Dai-Guard is somewhat obsolete and in disrepair. It's a tough job, but salarymen can also save the world.

Where it came from
Dai-Guard was produced by Studio Xebec and premiered in 1999 as a unique take on the mecha genre. Unlike typical series featuring elite pilots or legendary warriors, the show focuses on the mundane, corporate realities of operating a giant robot for a private security firm in a post-war society. The narrative reflects a shift in late-90s anime, blending giant robot spectacle with the bureaucratic frustrations and budget concerns of everyday office life.
The character and mecha designs, characterized by a utilitarian and somewhat bulky aesthetic, were crafted to emphasize the robot's role as a repurposed, aging piece of industrial equipment rather than a sleek super-weapon. The series was well-received by audiences for its humor and grounded premise, earning a cult following for its decision to prioritize the logistical headaches of robot maintenance and public relations over standard hero-versus-villain tropes.
