Where it came from
Daigo of Fire Company, known in Japan as Megumi no Daigo, was released as an animated feature film in 1999 following the success of Masahito Soda’s long-running manga series. Produced by Sunrise, the film captures the intensity of the source material, which chronicles the growth of Daigo Asahina, a rookie firefighter with a unique instinct for danger. The project sought to translate the manga's dramatic, high-stakes rescue sequences into the medium of animation, emphasizing the emotional toll and physical risks inherent in fire service.
The character design and visual direction were crafted to maintain the grounded, gritty aesthetic of the manga while leveraging the studio's technical capabilities in depicting fire and smoke dynamics. Upon its release, the film was received as a respectful adaptation that resonated with fans of the original work, particularly for its serious tone and its dedication to portraying the technical realities of firefighting. It remains a notable entry in the late-90s Sunrise catalog for its departure from the studio's more common mecha-focused output.
