Dai Luan - Zhou Enlai Tongnian Dushu de Gushi

Dai Luan’s 'Zhou Enlai Tongnian Dushu de Gushi' (The Story of Zhou Enlai Reading in His Childhood) emerged from the long-standing tradition of Chinese biographical educational literature aimed at cultivating moral character in youth. Published during a period when the state heavily emphasized the 'Red classics' and the emulation of revolutionary figures, this work serves as an hagiographical account of the early life of China's first Premier, focusing on his intellectual discipline and studious nature during his formative years.

The narrative design reflects the mid-to-late 20th-century pedagogical style in China, where illustrations were crafted to be accessible and evocative for a school-age audience. The artwork and prose were intended to instill a sense of national pride and scholarly rigor, positioning Zhou Enlai as the ideal archetype for the studious socialist youth. While the work is specific to its historical context, it remains a notable example of the era's commitment to using personal biography as a vehicle for ideological instruction.
