Where it came from
Dali Si Rizhi, known in English as White Cat Legend, originated as a popular manhua series by RC before being adapted into an ONA series by Nice Boat Animation. The project was conceived as a historical fantasy set during the Tang Dynasty, reimagining the Tang government's secret police, the Dali Si, through a whimsical lens that blends political intrigue with lighthearted comedy. Its creation was part of a broader push to modernize traditional Chinese storytelling elements for a contemporary digital audience.
The animation design emphasizes a stylized aesthetic that balances detailed period architecture with expressive, cartoon-like character designs. The production aimed to deliver a distinct visual identity that differentiates it from more traditional anime or hyper-realistic Chinese 3D animation. Upon its release, the series received positive critical attention for its unique humor and its ability to maintain high production values throughout the animation process, garnering a dedicated following within the Chinese animation community.
