Where it came from
Danball Senki Wars, produced by studio OLM and released in 2013, serves as the third and final television entry in the Little Battlers Experience franchise. It was developed to expand upon the transmedia success of Level-5’s hobby robot concept, transitioning the setting from a suburban battle-toy premise to a complex, military-academy simulation environment. The series was designed to appeal to a slightly older demographic by shifting the focus toward strategic group warfare and political intrigue within the World Savior facility.
The visual direction, led by OLM, maintained the series’ signature blend of traditional cel-shaded animation and 3D computer graphics for the mecha combat sequences, which were central to the franchise's identity. Upon release, the series was received as a stylistic departure from the earlier, more lighthearted iterations of the series, drawing praise for its ambition in world-building while remaining closely tied to the marketing of the associated plastic model kits that defined the franchise's commercial life.
