Shinji Yagami had always heard the rumors about female students being raped on campus - everyone did. Of course he never believed them until the day he stumbled across a website showing detailed pictures of female students being assaulted in the classrooms. Shocked to find himself turned on by what he sees, Shinji begins his descent into a world of voyeurism, S&M, and rape guided by fellow sadist Satoshi Kojima.
When Shinji's childhood friend Miku Iino begins to suspect that he may be involved with the string of campus rapes, she decides to confront him. Torn between his own dark desires and the horror of his crimes, will Shinji continue to hide his secret from Miku, or will she become the next target of his vicious desires?

Where it came from
Dark was produced in 2000 by studio Y.O.U.C, emerging during a period when independent and experimental animation studios were increasingly exploring darker, atmospheric narratives in the OVA format. The work functions as a reflective piece of late-nineties and early-aughts avant-garde Japanese animation, characterized by a minimalist aesthetic and a focus on psychological tension rather than conventional action-oriented storytelling.
The creative direction for the project prioritized mood and shadow, utilizing the OVA medium's relative freedom from broadcast constraints to experiment with pacing and visual abstraction. While the title remains a niche entry in the landscape of limited-release animation, it is frequently cited by enthusiasts of the era for its commitment to a stark, singular vision that avoids the common commercial tropes prevalent in the mainstream industry at the turn of the millennium.
