Where it came from
Dark Side Cat Versus was released in 2011 as a whimsical ONA, or Original Net Animation, produced by the studio Fanworks. The project emerged during a period when Japanese web animation was beginning to explore shorter, experimental formats that leveraged internet distribution to bypass traditional television broadcasting constraints. Its creation was part of a movement toward bite-sized, character-driven storytelling designed specifically for online audiences.
The animation centers on a stylized, feline protagonist caught in humorous, antagonistic situations, reflecting the studio's broader interest in blending simple, clean character designs with kinetic, slapstick-heavy visual comedy. While the project remains a relatively niche entry in the studio’s catalog, it is recognized for its minimalist aesthetic and its role in demonstrating how independent animation studios could utilize burgeoning digital platforms to cultivate a dedicated, albeit small, global audience.
