The distant future: Humanity established the mobile fort city, Plantation, upon the ruined wasteland. Within the city were pilot quarters, Mistilteinn, otherwise known as the “Birdcage.” That is where the children live... Their only mission in life was the fight. Their enemies are the mysterious giant organisms known as Kyoryu. The children operate robots known as FRANXX in order to face these still unseen enemies. Among them was a boy who was once called a child prodigy: Code number 016, Hiro. One day, a mysterious girl called Zero Two appears in front of Hiro. “I’ve found you, my Darling.”

Where it came from
Darling in the Franxx was produced as a collaborative project between studios A-1 Pictures and Trigger, debuting in early 2018. The series was conceived as a high-concept mecha drama that drew heavily on the visual language of mid-century science fiction and the thematic sensibilities of its creative lead, Atsushi Nishigori. The production aimed to explore complex interpersonal relationships through the lens of piloted combat, centering on the psychological bond required between pairs of pilots to operate their machines.
The character design was helmed by Masayoshi Tanaka, who worked to balance a sleek, futuristic aesthetic with grounded, emotive features. Upon its release, the series sparked significant global discourse, particularly regarding its narrative progression and stylistic influences. It is often analyzed for its departure from traditional genre tropes, standing as a notable experiment in joint-studio creative direction within the late 2010s anime landscape.
