Where it came from
Date A Bullet: Dead or Bullet & Nightmare or Queen was produced by studio GEEKTOYS as a two-part theatrical film adaptation of the Date A Live spin-off light novel series written by Yuichiro Higashide. Released in 2020, these films were created to expand the narrative universe of the franchise, shifting the focus from the original protagonist Shido Itsuka to the fan-favorite character Kurumi Tokisaki as she navigates the mysterious realm known as the Near World.
The production sought to capture the distinct, dark aesthetic of the source material while utilizing GEEKTOYS’ digital animation techniques to differentiate the tone from the main series. The films were designed to appeal to established fans of the light novels, receiving attention for their atmospheric visual direction and for providing a deeper exploration of Kurumi’s complex motivations and backstory, eventually finding a stable audience within the broader Date A Live media footprint.
