The story centers on Akira Ono, a regular guy who works at a company that manages an online game. He often plays the game as his character "Maou" (Dark Lord). But one day, when he logs on, he is whisked into the game's fantasy world as his character. There, he meets a one-legged girl, and begins his adventures alongside her. But as he is a powerful "Dark Lord," various nations and holy maidens journey to defeat him, and he stirs up trouble everywhere he goes.

Where it came from
Demon Lord, Retry! originated as a light novel series written by Kurone Kanzaki and illustrated by Kōji Ogata, debuting on the user-generated publishing site Shōsetsuka ni Narō in 2016. The story follows Akira Ōno, a working adult who is transported into the body of the 'Demon Lord' character he created for a video game, prompting him to navigate a fantasy world while interacting with various subordinates and NPCs. The premise taps into the popular isekai genre, blending themes of power fantasy with comedic misunderstandings as the protagonist attempts to manage his reputation and influence.
The 2019 television anime adaptation was produced by studio EKACHI EPILKA and directed by Hiroshi Kimura. The production aimed to translate the light novel’s mix of lighthearted adventure and strategic world-building into a traditional twelve-episode format. While the series received moderate attention within the crowded market of seasonal isekai programs, it is primarily noted for its adherence to the core tropes of the genre and its focus on the dynamic between the protagonist and his entourage, garnering a niche following among fans of supernatural adventure stories.
