Provenance

Where it came from

Demon of the Kick, or Kick no Oni, emerged in 1970 as part of the burgeoning sports anime genre that captured the post-war enthusiasm for competitive achievement in Japan. Produced by Toei Animation, the series centers on the intense world of professional soccer, reflecting the growing cultural interest in the sport during the lead-up to the 1970s, a decade that saw significant expansion in Japanese athletic broadcasts. It was created at a time when animation studios were increasingly looking toward manga serializations to provide dramatic, high-stakes narratives for television audiences.

The series was influenced by the distinct visual style of 1970s television animation, prioritizing dynamic action sequences and hyperbolic character growth to maintain viewer engagement. While it remains a less prominent entry in the expansive Toei catalog compared to later sports epics, the show is noted by animation historians for its contribution to the template of the 'guts' sports subgenre, where the protagonist overcomes internal and external hurdles through sheer force of will. Its reception was consistent with the era's standard for youth-oriented broadcasting, blending athleticism with melodrama.
