Densha Kamo Shirenai

Densha Kamo Shirenai, or 'Maybe It's a Train,' is a whimsical picture book by Japanese author and illustrator Yoshitake Shinsuke. Published in the mid-2010s, the work emerged from Shinsuke’s signature style of blending philosophical inquiry with playful, sparse line drawings. It was created to challenge the perception of everyday objects, encouraging readers to see mundane things like trains through a lens of limitless, imaginative possibility.

The book’s design is purposefully understated, featuring Shinsuke’s characteristic minimalist aesthetic that focuses on the internal monologue of the protagonist. It was met with significant critical acclaim in Japan, praised for its ability to resonate with both children and adults by highlighting the joy of lateral thinking. The work has since become a staple of contemporary Japanese children’s literature, frequently cited for its gentle approach to mindfulness and creativity.
