Where it came from
Released in 2001 as the fifth feature film in the long-running Detective Conan franchise, Countdown to Heaven was produced by TMS Entertainment. The film was created during the height of the series' surge in popularity, following the established formula of high-stakes mysteries involving the protagonist, Shinichi Kudo. Directed by Kenji Kodama, the production aimed to blend the series' characteristic puzzle-solving elements with a large-scale disaster scenario, centered around the opening of the futuristic Twin Tower skyscrapers in Nishitamashi.
The film was designed to test the limits of the Detective Conan narrative structure by incorporating the Black Organization as a primary antagonist, providing a rare and intense overlap between the standalone film plots and the ongoing manga's central mystery. It was well-received by fans and critics alike for its tense pacing and the dramatic spectacle of its climax, consistently ranking as one of the most beloved entries in the series for its balance of suspense and character development.
