Provenance

Where it came from

Released in 2003 as the seventh installment in the long-running Detective Conan film series, Crossroad in the Ancient Capital marked a significant milestone for the franchise by being the first film in the series to win the annual box office race for Japanese animated films. Directed by Kenji Kodama and produced by TMS Entertainment, the production utilized the backdrop of Kyoto’s historic temples and traditional districts to move the narrative away from the series' usual urban settings, aiming to offer fans a more atmospheric and culturally rich mystery.

The film's design and narrative structure were crafted to highlight the contrast between modern investigative techniques and the deep-seated traditions of Kyoto. Gosho Aoyama, the creator of the original manga, maintained significant creative oversight to ensure the integration of the series' core ensemble felt natural within this new environment. Upon release, the film was well received by audiences for its fluid animation of the Kyoto landscape and its focus on the burgeoning friendship between Conan and Heiji Hattori, establishing a template for the series' future high-stakes travel-themed sequels.
