Where it came from
Devilman: The Birth represents the first installment of the 1987 original video animation series, produced by Oh! Production and distributed by King Records. Adapting the early chapters of Go Nagai’s seminal 1972 manga, the project was created to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the franchise. It sought to capture the darker, more visceral elements of the source material that were previously toned down for the 1970s television anime adaptation, emphasizing horror and mature themes.
The production team, led by director Umanosuke Iida, utilized a stark aesthetic and fluid character designs to reflect the visceral intensity of Nagai’s vision. By distancing itself from the child-friendly tropes of the original broadcast, the OVA was well-received by fans for its fidelity to the grim tone of the manga. It remains a significant milestone in the 1980s OVA boom, showcasing a heightened level of graphic storytelling that influenced subsequent dark fantasy anime.
