Synopsis

Following an accident in the Himalayas, Akira Fudou's body has been taken over by none other than the fearsome demon, Devilman. However, upon living with Akira's relatives, Devilman has come to find himself rather fond of humanity - even if it means getting roughed up by his girlfriend, the Most Dangerous Miki Makimura for acting out, much to the Demon Lord Xenon's dismay. Wishing to kill the traitor, Xenon begins unleashing a series of cruel, grotesque demons unto Earth, and only Devilman stands between them and humanity's demise. Can the reluctant hero save his soul while keeping the city and his secret identity safe?

Provenance

Where it came from

Devilman debuted as a television series in 1972, produced by Toei Animation as a companion to Go Nagai's manga of the same name. While the manga was known for its visceral, dark, and uncompromising exploration of human nature and apocalypse, the television production was significantly retooled to meet the expectations of a younger audience. This version focused on an episodic superhero structure, depicting Akira Fudo as a protector of humanity against various demon threats rather than the more tragic figure found in the source material.

The character design was overseen by Kazuo Komatsubara, whose work helped define the aesthetic of 1970s anime. By shifting the tone away from the nihilistic intensity of the original manga, Toei aimed to capitalize on the success of the henshin hero genre while maintaining the signature, grotesque demon designs that distinguished Go Nagai's portfolio. Although initially criticized by fans of the manga for its drastic softening of the narrative, the series remains a significant artifact in the development of the dark fantasy genre in television animation.
