Devil Hunter Yohko

Devil Hunter Yohko, or Mamono Hunter Yohko, was released in 1990 as a two-part original video animation (OVA) produced by the renowned studio Madhouse. Emerging during the late 1980s and early 1990s anime boom, the project was designed to capitalize on the popularity of supernatural action-comedies. It tells the story of an ordinary high school girl who discovers her lineage as the 108th descendant of a family of demon hunters, blending occult themes with the lighthearted, often irreverent humor characteristic of the era's straight-to-video market.

The character design was spearheaded by Yasuomi Umetsu, whose distinctive visual style became a hallmark of the series. Umetsu aimed to balance high-energy action sequences with an appealing, contemporary aesthetic that resonated with the demographic of the time. While the series eventually spawned a franchise, including sequels and a video game, it remains most notable as a classic example of early 1990s OVA production, reflecting the period's experimental approach to genre-blending animation.
