Diao Long Ji

Diao Long Ji, or The Story of Carving Dragons, emerged from the Shanghai Animation Film Studio during a period of prolific artistic exploration in Chinese traditional animation. Produced using the studio's signature paper-cut animation technique, the film was designed to preserve and revitalize traditional folklore narratives, integrating aesthetic elements of Chinese folk art and shadow puppetry to create a distinct visual language that diverged from contemporary international styles.

The film was crafted by a collective of animators at the studio who were committed to the pedagogical and cultural mission of the post-revolutionary era. By focusing on themes of patience, mastery, and the pursuit of artistic excellence, the creators sought to provide a moral narrative for younger audiences. Upon its release, it was regarded as a technically accomplished entry in the studio's repertoire, celebrated for its fluid manipulation of jointed characters and its authentic representation of historical artistic traditions.
