Dies irae

Dies irae, released as a television anime in 2017, serves as an adaptation of the influential visual novel originally developed by Light. The project gained significant attention through a successful crowdfunding campaign, which allowed the studio Genco to bring the dense, occult-themed narrative to the screen. It was produced to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the source material, aiming to translate the complex 'Throne' cosmology and intense action sequences that defined the original game for a broader audience.

The visual design and animation direction sought to preserve the gothic, neo-noir aesthetic established by illustrator G-Yuusuke, whose character designs were central to the franchise's identity. Despite the ambition behind the project, the transition from the interactive, lengthy visual novel format to a standard television series structure proved challenging for critics and viewers alike. The final product remains a notable, albeit divisive, entry in the modern dark fantasy subgenre, remembered primarily for its dedicated fan following and ambitious source material.
