Where it came from
D.N.Angel originated as a manga series by Yukiru Sugisaki before being adapted into a 26-episode television anime series by Studio Xebec in 2003. The story follows Daisuke Niwa, a teenager who inherits the ability to transform into the legendary phantom thief Dark Mousy whenever he experiences romantic feelings, a premise rooted in the supernatural shōjo traditions prevalent at the turn of the millennium.
The character designs were crafted to emphasize the duality of the protagonist, juxtaposing Daisuke's ordinary school life with the flamboyant, gothic-inspired aesthetic of his alter ego. Upon its release, the series became a notable entry in the mid-2000s anime boom, particularly for its blend of fantasy and romance, though it is often remembered as much for its iconic soundtrack and visual style as for the creative departures the studio took from the original source material's narrative path.
