Where it came from
DNA² originated as a science fiction manga series by Masakazu Katsura, published in Weekly Shōnen Jump starting in 1993, before being adapted into a 12-episode television series by Studio Madhouse in 1994. The narrative blends romance and futuristic technology, focusing on a protagonist who must be prevented from fathering a child who will eventually cause a global population crisis. Its production captures the transition period of mid-nineties anime, characterized by a mix of traditional cel animation and the early integration of digital aesthetics.
Studio Madhouse collaborated with Studio Deen to bring Katsura’s distinct character designs to life, emphasizing his signature focus on detailed portraiture and expressive features. The series was designed to balance high-concept sci-fi themes with the comedic and interpersonal tropes typical of the shōnen genre at the time. While it remains a notable entry in the catalog of both the studio and the creator, it is often discussed by contemporary fans as a quintessential example of the aesthetic trends prevalent in the mid-1990s domestic anime market.
