Where it came from
Do It Yourself!! was produced by the studio PINE JAM and premiered in 2022 as an original television anime series. Set in the city of Sanjo, Niigata—a region historically renowned for its metalworking and craftsmanship—the show centers on a group of high school students who form a DIY club to pursue woodworking and manual projects. The series serves as a gentle exploration of the intersection between traditional hand-crafted techniques and modern digital life, emphasizing the value of patience and physical labor in an increasingly automated world.
The character design was spearheaded by Yusuke Matsuo, who utilized a distinct, soft aesthetic characterized by muted colors and sketchbook-like line work to capture the warmth of the characters' hobbyist pursuits. Directed by Kazuhiro Yoneda, the show was crafted to be an 'iyashikei' or healing series, intended to provide viewers with a sense of calm. It received positive critical attention for its unique visual identity and its commitment to portraying the technical processes of building furniture with a surprising level of grounded accuracy.
